DRIFT-FOOD Presents Research at RETASTE 2026
The DRIFT-FOOD team participated in the 6th International Conference RETASTE: Rethink Food Resources, Losses, and Waste, held in Rethymno, Greece, September 16–18, 2026.
The conference brought together researchers, entrepreneurs, NGOs, policymakers, and food-system stakeholders to explore innovative approaches to reducing food loss and waste and advancing circular food systems.
DRIFT-FOOD researchers presented four contributions focused on the valorisation of brewers’ spent grain and apple pomace and the use of innovative technologies for recovering valuable compounds:
- Oral presentation: Valorisation of Apple Pomace Seed Oil: Effect of the Use of Pulsed Electric Fields on Oil Recovery and Oil Functional Properties –
Dr. S. Teresita Martín-del-Campo, Giada Emanuele - Oral presentation: Pulsed Electric Field & Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Brewers’ Spent Grain – Dr. Alexa Perez Alva
- Poster: Brewers’ Spent Grain Protein as a Novel Pickering Emulsion Stabilizer –
Dr. Bakht Ramin Shah - Poster: Valorisation of Apple Pomace Pectin Through Tailored Acid Hydrolysis: Structural Characterisation and Application in Gummy Candies – Dr. Ali Kozlu
The four contributions demonstrate the DRIFT-FOOD team’s commitment to developing innovative, sustainable approaches for the valorisation of food-processing by-products. By combining emerging extraction technologies with the development of new functional ingredients and food applications, this research contributes to the transition towards more sustainable and resource-efficient food systems.
